Busy Days in P1
LO:  I am exploring and making choices about how I measure.
We have been exploring different ways to measure things including a balance, scales and measuring tape.  We have also spoken about measuring water and we investigated how much water different containers can hold.

LO:  I can sequence the main points of the story.
We have been doing lots of reading activities this week.  We have worked on sequencing pictures from our reading books and sequencing words to make sentences.  Some people have really enjoyed making books with a picture on the front.  We have also set up a listening centre in the story corner and Mrs Taylor took people to the library to choose some new books for it too.

We have also been enjoying playing with some new things in our classroom.  We have been making lots of things at the art and craft table.  Eve and Murray have made a nest for their mobilo birds, using twigs and mobilo.  Thorfinn, Francis and Logan are playing in the sand with dinosaurs, twigs and pine cones and Francis is making a farm using green felt for fields.

Here we all are singing our favourite Jolly Phonics song so far!

Thank You!
Thanks to everyone for taking in money to help us raise money for Children in Need.  We had enough coppers to cover our Pudsey.  Altogether the school raised £590.

P1 Homework 18.11.3
For homework this week try the caterpillar counting game.  You have to put the numbers in the right order.  You can choose how big you want the numbers to be.

Children in Need!
Today we are all wearing our pyjamas to school because it is Children in Need day!  P2 told us all about Children in Need at their assembly yesterday and today we are doing things in school to raise money for this charity.  In P1 we are trying to cover a Pudsey in pennies.  We hope we raise lots of money.  Listen to Radio Orkney tonight to find out how much.

Donations Welcome!
We are still looking for toys and real life things to enhance the play in P1.   In particular, things to kit out a home corner or to help us look after our babies would be much appreciated.  If you have any of the following, please bring it along to the school.
Dolls bed and blankets, pram, bath, or any real baby things like nappies, bottles and toys.
Old mobile phones, tv remotes, phones, computer keyboards.
Many thanks!

Lost!
Mr Bingham came in this morning and told us that Mum and Dad had lost some of the children!  Kipper, Biff, Chip, Wilf, Wilma, Nadim and Aneena were lost in the playground.  So was Gran!  We worked in small groups to find them.  Then we came back in and spoke about where each character was found.  We had a little discussion about what to do if your mum or dad wasn’t there at the end of school and decided the best thing to do is to come in and tell a teacher who can look after you until they arrive.  Thanks Mr Bingham for setting this all up for us.

John Rae Week - Day 1
This week we are learning about a famous Orcadian - John Rae.  We are learning about what life was like when he was alive and how different it is now.  Today we went a visit to the Stromness Museum to see how we preserve the past and give us a better idea of life nearly 200 years ago!  Here we are at the statue of John Rae.  He has a knife and gun for hunting!

Patterns!

We have been making different kinds of patterns in P1.  We used the pegs and shells to make patterns and after we read one of the e-books we made patterned flags just like Toby.  Some boys and girls made patterns on the whiteboard.  We also like to make sound and actions patterns.

Heinemann Active Maths
We have started to use lots of the Heinemann Active Maths resources to help us with our counting.  Everyone has enjoyed clapping and playing the drum to help us count.  We also like to play the 'trick' game where we sometimes count out the wrong number of treasure pieces!
Counting out dinosaurs to make 'Dinosaur Land'

Using the 0-10 dice to put toys in the toy shop.

Counting the spots on the dice and moving our character into the snake's nest.

Playing one of the Smart Board games - finding the matching picture and number.

The Letter D!
Today we were learning about the letter D.  We looked at where it is on the alphabet then we thought of some words and found some pictures that start with D.  Then Daniel and Tom came through to show us a dragonfly they had found!

Play, Talk, Read
Today we all visited the Play, Talk, Read bus that was in the school car park.  We had great fun singing songs and using a piece of stretchy fabric to make the bunnies hop!  Maybe we will sing some of those songs again next week.

Our First Day!
This was the first day at school for P1.  First we shared some news about what we had done in our holidays.  Then we all had a play in our new classroom.  Some people even did some P1 'work' - drawing a picture and doing some 'writing!'
After playtime we got changed and went to P.E to meet Ms Ferguson.  We did some running, making shapes, balancing bean bags and playing with hoops and balloons.  It was great fun!
We managed to squeeze in a story before we had to go home.
I hope everyone is looking forward to tomorrow!
